The Fake App Wave: What Parents Are Downloading by Mistake
Search data tells a worrying story: thousands of parents are typing “can’t download Trump account app” and “Trump account app not working” — and a scam industry has positioned itself precisely in that frustration. App-store lookalikes with official-sounding names are collecting fees and, far worse, children’s Social Security numbers.
Why the store search is the trap
Official government apps rank poorly in their own app stores while lookalikes optimize hard for those exact searches. A frustrated parent searching the store meets the fake before the real thing — which is the entire business model. The only safe route to any official app is the link on trumpaccounts.gov itself.
The three-second filter
Any fee = fake. Any SSN request outside the .gov site or IRS filing = fake. Any app reached from an ad, text, or store search = treat as fake. And remember the liberating truth: no app is required at all — enrollment and the $1,000 run completely through the website and Form 4547.
If a fake already has your child’s data
Move fast, skip the shame: freeze the child’s credit at all three bureaus, file at IdentityTheft.gov, report the app. The complete playbook lives in our scams field guide.
